Your safety is our top priority on and off the water
All members, participants, and visitors of Richmond Hill Canoe Club are required to follow these safety rules at all times. These rules are in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone at our club. Failure to comply may result in suspension or termination of membership.
All paddlers must wear a properly fitted, Transport Canada approved PFD at all times when on or near the water. PFDs must be worn and fastened correctly before entering any watercraft.
All participants must pass a 50-meter swim test before participating in programs. This test ensures you can safely return to shore in the event of a capsize.
Never paddle alone. Always use the buddy system and stay within sight of your group. Youth participants must be under direct supervision of a certified coach at all times.
Do not paddle in adverse weather conditions including lightning, high winds, or poor visibility. Coaches have the authority to cancel or postpone sessions due to weather.
Always inspect your boat and equipment before use. Report any damage or safety concerns to a coach or club official immediately. Do not use damaged equipment.
Paddle only in designated areas as instructed by coaches. Respect boundary markers and stay clear of boat traffic, docks, and restricted zones.
Follow marine right-of-way rules. Paddle craft must yield to larger vessels. When in doubt, yield and maintain a safe distance from other watercraft.
If you capsize, stay with your boat. It provides flotation and is easier for rescuers to spot. Signal for help and wait for assistance. Never attempt to swim to shore unless absolutely necessary.
Walk, don't run, on docks and around the boathouse. Watch for trip hazards and slippery surfaces. Use handrails when available.
Always carry boats with at least two people using proper lifting techniques. Place boats carefully on racks to prevent damage. Report any dropped or damaged boats immediately.
The use of alcohol or recreational drugs is strictly prohibited before and during all club activities. This includes prescription medications that may impair judgment or coordination.
In case of emergency:
Emergency: 911
Location: Richmond Hill Canoe Club, Lake Wilcox
