Sprint canoe and kayak races are contested over three distances on flat water courses:
Races are held in various boat types, designated by letter and number:

The roots of canoe and kayak racing in Canada trace back to Indigenous peoples who developed these watercraft thousands of years ago for transportation, hunting, and fishing. These vessels were essential to survival and trade, and their design principles continue to influence modern racing boats.
Canoe Kayak Canada (CKC) was founded in 1900, making it one of the oldest national sport organizations in the country. Since Canada's first participation in Olympic canoe/kayak competition in 1936, Canadian athletes have won an impressive 24 Olympic medals, establishing the nation as a powerhouse in the sport.
Today, Canada continues to produce world-class paddlers who compete at the highest levels of international competition, inspiring the next generation of athletes at clubs like Richmond Hill Canoe Club.
The 2020 Olympics marked a historic moment for the sport with the addition of women's canoe events, achieving full gender equality in canoe and kayak competition. For the first time, women competed in the C-1 and C-2 events, joining their male counterparts in a complete program that celebrates athleticism without gender barriers.
Whether you're looking to try paddling for the first time, develop your skills, or train at a competitive level, Richmond Hill Canoe Club offers programs for all ages and abilities. Join us on the water and discover the excitement of sprint canoe and kayak!
